SEO tip: Sub domain or sub folder – which is better for SEO?
This is a question I get from marketers and business owners fairly regularly
So it was good to know that the advice I’ve been giving over the years, is exactly what Gabriel Grossman prescribes
Gabe says the sub-folder wins, as Google will see a sub folder as part of the same website
Whereas a sub-domain is seen as a separate website – needing it’s own authority to rank
The analogy I use is like so:
*A sub-folder is like having your mother in law move into your spare room. If she needs to receive mail, it’s easily received at your address
*A sub-domain is like having your mother in law move into a granny flat out back. She may still receive her mail, but as it’s not attached to the main house (domain) it’s just a bit harder to get found
Of course, there are advantages for the granny flat option! But from an SEO perspective, not so much
Thoughts?
